<rant>
god dammit!!! dammit, dammit, dammit! stop stigmatizing the fucking gay people. it's not funny. even if you think its funny, its not. no. it is not. it is not funny to be mistaken as gay any more than it was to be mistaken as mullato in the south in the 1960's.

Re: homophobic gag gifts...
Sat, November 13, 2004 - 1:52 PMthat really does suck... on a related note:
I go to school at Cal Poly, SLO, let me tell you, SLO is a very close-minded little town. To give you an idea: the glbt center on campus is in a portable. So anyway, every year the landscape architecture students, in some class they all have to take during their curriculum, have to create an art installation on campus. There have been various things in the past.. they're notoriously ugly and easy to figure out (I am an art student, so our installations are notoriously beautiful and difficult to figure out. haha). This year they built a set up that looked like a Christian wedding chapel set up. Walking down the aisle there were various couples: first a hetero couple (typical christian bride and groom garb), next a gay male couple, then a lesbian couple, another gay male couple, and finally, a man and a dog. So basically, they are equating homosexuality to beastiality. Fortunately, they included message boards as a part of the installation, so a dialogue began and there were many angry students. Just to make it clear: I don't think this thing should have been censored or anything. These students had a right to make their statement, even if it's a sad one. Just it certainly is sad. I was taking some time to read the various messages people had written, and I found one message that was clearly along the lines of those magnetic bumper stickers. Some dude (I could tell it was a dude) wrote, "I am gay, and proud! -Pat Stone" or I don't know what the name was, but it was clearly some dude trying to embarrass his friend Pat, and I'm sure he and whoever else was with him when they did it, walked away in hysterics. Rar! So stupid. But then again, the installation was pretty stupid, so what can I expect?
Why do I live in the mini-fundamentalist-bible-belt?? -

Re: homophobic gag gifts...
Sun, November 14, 2004 - 6:13 PMi guess you really, really liked the article...it was good. it brings up a number of good points, both about homophobia and first amendment rights. my best friend was in slo for 3 years and complained about what a hick town it is (even though she is much more conservative than me...) so i feel your pain on that one. -
